Did Russia engineer the removal of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom?
It does seem an unlikely probability that one state can have such influence over another. Yet mainstream media and the world web are agog with stories of international cyber-attacks on governmental agencies, interference in national elections and foreign imposed regime change. A brief look at Wikipedia provides a long and varied list of the several types of interference which could initiate regime change. Not all blameable on the Russian Federation by any means, Why look at Russia in this instance? According to media comments there was much joy in the Russia state at the fall of Boris Johnson. That is clearly understandable as of all the western leaders he was by far the most anti-Russian and was very public about it.
However, the question would remain could Russia actually manufacture such an out-come? It would be very childish and naive to think the events which led to his downfall such as the party gate affair and lack of command over the civil service in Downing St were directly created by the Russian’s. The consensus for the removal of the Prime Minister appears to lie on the basis that we, as the public, could not under any elaboration be sure that he did at least not know or was part of many of the allegations made against him. The serious question about overseas influence comes to the fore when we consider, how information is falling into the public view, such as edited video content that the media so dramatize.
Did doors within the civil service fuel these leaks? or indeed was there collaboration with a corner of Russia as we alluded to above. Or as many would consider more likely the leaks came from the blue blood Tories who had an unquestionable dislike for Johnson. Certainly, much easier for the Tory hierarchy to make this happen as it is closer to hand and does perhaps have an influence within the echelons of the civil service. The speed of his demise is also systematic of how the Tories act against leaders they wish removed; indeed, some commentators having observed that they are the most adept political party at backstabbing and slashing colleagues if they think the central English conservative dogma is at risk. There can be no question of that but what did they think they were going to gain. Because the polls showed lack of support for Johnson at the time did not confirm his removal would increase the chances of having another Tory win at the next general election. Indeed, quite the contrary as the last election was won by Johnson’s anti-establishment outward form which appealed to the working-class voter, or the ’red wall’ as the mainstream media like to call them.
Was it his naivety or just chance events coming together that brought down Johnson or was it the ‘deep state’ within the Tory party or at the extreme end control by the Russian government. What an uproar! to make an allegation about a link between the blue-blooded Conservatives and the Russian bear! When the war in Ukraine started Boris Johnson and his side kick Truss very quickly encouraged the demonisation of the Russian oligarch’s. The very same people the conservative establishment sat in their clubs for drinks with and perhaps were even funded by. For these losses would it not be a good revenge to get rid of Johnson? Indeed, look what happened to Liz Truss as Prime Minister, her slaying was even more dramatic. Is there any evidence that the Russians were involved, well we have none, just an opinion.
If such were a possibility would not the media have had a frenzy about it. Yes, but who could lead the public onslaught? When such whispers appeared in the bars, clubs and back offices where the media do their discussion would it not be agreed that it be hidden from the public domain as it would make the British anti-Russian and anti-Johnson media look as if they were collaborators in the Prime Ministers downfall by a foreign power.
Is it physically possible that Putin and his supporters could manipulate, such a world changing event. It would appear so. A comment from the Intelligence and Security Committee ‘Russia’ report of July 2020 states, “What is clear is that Russian influence in the UK is ‘the new normal’:
An article in Brookings in July 2019 quotes.
Putin is using many tools at his disposal to realize the goal of weakening Western democracy. As a 2018 report by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee put it:
For years, Vladimir Putin’s government has engaged in a relentless assault to undermine democracy and the rule of law in Europe and the United States. Mr. Putin’s Kremlin employs an asymmetric arsenal that includes military invasions, cyberattacks, disinformation, support for fringe political groups, and the weaponization of energy resources, organized crime, and corruption.
In an article in Horasis in Feb 22 Frank Jurgen-Richter wrote; ( https://horasis.org/the-scourge-of-foreign-interference-in-local-affairs/ )
“Following former US President Donald Trump’s electoral win in 2016, a possible Russian interference—that was alleged to have changed the election’s outcomes—was widely reported. Although investigating agencies later found no veracity in these claims, the threat of unsolicited foreign intrusion remains.”
The statement that agencies found ‘no veracity’ in these claims, is perhaps true in this case but appears to be symptomatic of most investigations into high level Russian interference in western matters. One wonders why, is all this just fake news from the conspiracy theorists or is there a form of collusion at a senior level within the civil service and elected members.
In October, this year the Shetland Isles to the north of Scotland lost all their internet, landline, and mobile services when the subsea cable to the UK mainland was cut. A few weeks on The National {A Scottish newspaper} ran a story which stated that the UK Foreign Secretary had considered it could be sabotage by Russia. Strangely or perhaps correctly the mainstream UK media dismissed such suggestions and concluded the damage had been done by a fishing boat. The point being that for the Minister to make such a comment the British Security Services must have thought there was a possibility.
So, it would appear there are wide-ranging allegations about the Russian ability to solicitously intervene in the affairs of other sovereign states.
Is it not a rather fanciful suggestion that the Kremlin was complicit in the removal of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom? But what IF? IF so, how deep is Russian control hidden within the British establishment? We cannot opinion with certainty that such could be true which is why we use “if” in capitals.
The UK military leaders via the media inform the country how Russia is losing the war in Ukraine which perhaps is true on the ground but what about the ‘hybrid’ war who is winning that?
What is terrifyingly worrying is that ‘if’ such were correct then the autocratic Putin and the Russian Bear are already on the way to winning the war against the West.
